Davis, all tooled up as General Nanisca in The Woman King.
I FIRST TOOK notice of Viola Davis when I watched Antwone Fisher. She had one scene, and no lines. I remember thinking, “God, who was that?” Then there was Doubt. Again, one scene. And I’ve never forgotten it. The performance was extraordinary. Despite everything she was saying as a mother about her child, I still cared about her. I understood her and was moved by her. And that was opposite Meryl Streep.
