MORFYDD CLARK HAS been working on screen since 2014, but it was the Welsh actor’s intense turn in Rose Glass’ 2019 horror Saint Maud — about an unstable hospice nurse who descends into psychosis — that shook us up. Since then, she’s starred in His Dark Materials, Craig Roberts’ comic-drama Eternal Beauty and the BBC’s 2020 take on Dracula, but now, as Galadriel in Prime Video’s The Lord Of The Rings prequel, she’ll be taking on orcs, trolls and all matter of evil. As she tells us, she was born to do it…
Did you have to audition for Galadriel?
Many, many times [laughs]. The first one, I didn’t know what I was auditioning for. The actress next to me looked over all sneaky and was like, “Do you know what this is for? It’s Lord Of The Rings.” And I’m forever grateful to her. Because I went into the toilet and just stared at myself and was like, “You’ve gotta pull yourself together. You’ve been training for this for years. You know what to do, it’s in your blood.” Because I’d been obsessively watching Lord Of The Rings for my whole childhood.
You play an armoured Galadriel in the show. There is fighting, and swordplay. Did you avoid injury?
