Clear your pond now to give it a healthy start to the season
Take all rotting plant material – including dead leaves, branches and any other detritus – out of the pond before the water warms any more and uses up all the available oxygen in the pond. Then go through all the plants, trimming out old foliage from around the base. If you have waterlilies, get your arms right down into the plant and trim back last year’s flower stems and any foliage that is left. Also prune back any branches that are dangling in or near the pond. Large bodies of water can usually cope with all the above waste, but a small garden pond is vulnerable and needs to be maintained regularly.
