Beginner Group Those Who Could Not Ski
by Mne J Thompson, 42 Cdo RM
After learning to survival ski in Norway which in my case wasn’t elegant in the slightest, the opportunity to learn how to Telemark and look good doing it was too much to miss. On first arriving at the slopes in Austria and finding some couldn’t really ski, we clipped our toes in and with heels free were reintroduced to alpine with greater in depth coaching to ensure the basics were correct. Establishing these basics was a nervous time, completing an exercise stacking up at the side of the slope like bowling pins for a ‘ski tard’ Boss to come hurtling in at Mach 10 to wipe us all out, put us on edge. But we made it through this phase relatively unscathed and could now be introduced to Telemark after a great run ashore in Innsbruck over the weekend. Although at first it seemed impossible, it came on, as did the burning thighs. By the end of the second week my whole group could send it down a red comfortably in Tele, as well as passing over different conditions, with a little more refinement needed to polish it off. The exercise was concluded with a race, although everyone said they were not going to send it on the start line, the red mist came down. Loads of crashes and good finishing times showed that the lads took it to the edge of what they could do. Overall, it was an amazing trip and brought on my skiing ability tenfold, I recommend it to all.
