IMT 1/24
by Musn W Thornley
Members of the Band Service are expected to operate as soldiers as well as musicians, so on 23 September 2024, the 23 members of Royal Marines Band Troop 1/24 began a ten week Initial Military Training programme at CTCRM. Stepping off the platform at Lympstone Commando, we were in for a package that included all basic military skills such as drill, fieldcraft and a range package all without a single musical instrument in sight!

The RM Band Service’s operational role consists of battle First Aid and CBRN decontamination and so we spent a week on base focused on these aspects. Following lectures from our own training team and SMEs of the Band Service, the Tp donned respirators and went into the gas chamber. We each performed several drills before being exposed to CS gas, reporting to the team and then exiting the chamber as quick as possible while coughing our guts up! Our First Aid training consisted of enacting different battle scenarios, including learning how to apply tourniquets to each other. These became gradually more difficult, showing that under pressure, we can effectively carry out the correct procedures to take care of a battlefield casualty.
