Wreath bases are made from three major classes of materials: foam, wire and natural material, such as straw or grapevine.

Nothing is more welcoming than a beautiful wreath on your front door. Think of a wreath as the farmhouse version of a welcome mat, a vivid way to greet guests and celebrate the beauty of the seasons. While you can purchase wreaths with hefty price tags in the store, we farm women have a frugal option for decorating our homes, compliments of Mother Nature. By drawing inspiration from the seasons, foraging in the garden and innovatively recycling what you already have on hand, you can create custom-made wreaths that can readily transform to reflect the current season.

A front-door wreath — or anywhere in your house for that matter — connects you with a rich history that reaches back thousands of years. The wreath concept can be found in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, where they were originally donned as crowns by magistrates and royalty to represent achievement and honor. Plants have always been a natural choice for wreaths: A wreath made from aromatic bay-laurel leaves crowned the victors at the ancient Greek Olympic games. As the modern Olympics traveled to different locations, each host city created wreaths from local tree leaves, including olive trees.
