HOW TO... LEARN LANGUAGES

No one is really sure how we learn our second language, but there’s one man who’s got a very good idea: Stephen Krashen. You can read about his ideas in the book Principles and Practice in Second Language Acquisition, which consists of five main points. These are:

1. The acquisitionlearning hypothesis

2. The monitor hypothesis

3. The natural order hypothesis

4. The input hypothesis

5. The affective filter hypothesis

1 The acquisitionlearning hypothesis

According to Krashen there are two systems of second language learning: a) the acquired system; b) the learned system. a) The acquired system refers to the way we absorb language subconsciously - the way we learn it naturally as children by playing, reading, listening, singing and speaking. b) The “learned system” refers to the language we learn in class - the “rules” about grammar, spelling and pronunciation, etc. According to Krashen, “acquisition” is a lot more important than “learning”.
