Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë are the most famous sisters in English literature. Their novels were groundbreaking at the time and are still hugely popular. But their lives, like their books, were full of drama and tragedy.

The tragic lives of three famous writers: Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë.

There were six Brontë children: five girls and one boy. They lived in a village in Yorkshire called Howarth. Their father, Patrick Brontë, was the village parson. It’s a beautiful but bleak and rainy area of England. The family’s stone house was surrounded by dramatic and windsweptmoors.

Tragedy struck the family early. The children’s mother, Maria Brontë, died in 1821. And then, in 1825 and 1826, the two eldest daughters died of tuberculosis*. Patrick raised the remaining four children alone. He was a strict father and also had a temper. Sometimes he’d shoot a gun from out of the back door to let off steam.
