The finished drawing for the portrait, which we will begin to paint next month

I love the feel of watercolour and the challenges this fantastic medium brings. I have been painting for nearly 40 years and continue to be amazed by the effects I can make with it. I still enjoy practising how to control the flow of water, but most of all, I relish the process of learning itself, which is something we never stop doing as artists.

Over the next three months, I will be showing you the materials and techniques used to paint a detailed portrait of this roe deer (right). This month, I want to look at how we can get closer to wildlife and photograph it for our own reference material, before discussing some of the aspects of painting both wildlife and pets, and helping you to draw an accurate rendition of the subject. The following two articles (in the Summer and August issues) will show the process of painting the deer in detail.

About Leisure Painter

Welcome to the July issue of Leisure Painter, aimed at beginners and amateur painters. Subjects covered this month include landscapes, seascapes, urban scenes, portraits, wild and domesticated animals and birds, flowers and natural still lifes. We introduce a short series on painting buildings in pastel and there are also two new painting projects to try: learn how to simplify a busy harbour scene and paint a portrait of a roe deer. From techniques and colours for painting rain, puddles and reflections in acrylic and painting natural textures in watercolour to drawing exercises and step-by-step demonstrations for you to try, we aim to include something for everyone in each issue.
