H ad you’d asked us in 2017 whether UBports (the community that rekindled the ill-fated Ubuntu Touch) would still be going in five years we’d almost certainly have said yes, because despite our sullen appearances we always strive for positivism. But even we would be somewhat taken aback to hear that by now the OS is in its 20th iteration and almost certainly your best bet if you want to run free software on your phone, and still be able to use phone features. Yes there are OSes derived from the Android Open Source Project (LineageOS, times these feel like cut-back versions of Android-proper. When you see UBPorts in action, with its groovy app stacking and intuitive gesture navigation, you realise it’s very much in its own league.
