It’s only now, five years and over five million streams since his debut EP Th e Quiet, that Adam Gray, aka Chelou, feels “ready for this”. ‘Th is’ being a wholehearted enrollment in the music industry. Chelou is French slang for hidden and shady, so what more fitting way for Gray to step out of the shadows and into the light professionally than with a record named Out Of Sight?
Although Gray’s Chelou project has retained a shadowy mystique, it’s not him or his band that are out of sight here. Rather, it’s an expression of frustration at all the unseens of existence as a musician; the conversations that go on behind closed doors, the 40-hour working weeks in bars, the forces that operate behind the lens pulling and pushing life in and out of focus.
