Down at the canal wharf, the nearby colliery is disposing of all sorts of junk, including Beryl’s old Austin Seven, which was condemned by the local mechanic years ago. Back in the day, she used to race cars at Brooklands, so she’s quite used to the dangers of the roads and the perils of the racetrack. Today, she’s just taken delivery of an all-new three-wheeled Heinkel Trojan with the door on the front. It’s doubtful it will be any safer than the old Austin, but at least in the event of a crunch she’ll be able to climb through the canvas sunroof. Or in her case, be craned out.
