More late summer 1980s’ musings
DONALD Skeegan came to the rescue the other morning when a near neighbour couldn’t release the handbrake of the family car. Her husband had pulled it up too tightly. Along came Skeegan and, as befits the Hydro employees who can turn their hand to anything technical, he soon sorted it out. Interestingly, the same thing happened to our hero when he lived in London. He came out of the house one morning, opened the car door, jumped in and couldn’t get the handbrake to behave. Nothing for it but to go to work by Tube. He didn’t come back home on the Underground, however. That afternoon, Janet turned up at the office with the car. She had managed to release the handbrake alright.
THIS is a bit like ‘the biter bit’. Allan was on the post run between Corpach and Glenfinnan. ‘Good dog,’ he said to a large Alsatian located around these parts. But ‘good dog’ located itself round Allan’s finger, a follow-up to a similar tasting of a postie three weeks earlier. I said ‘biter bit’ because Allan had been telling me about a dog which had nipped Hector’s leg in that same part of Lochaber.
