The August issue of Opera Now celebrates the genius of Giuseppe Verdi.

In a special focus on the composer and his music, we visit the city of Parma, home to a major annual festival that bears his name and celebrates his work; Michael Tanner explores Verdi's place in the development of Italian opera in the 19th century and his innovative role in modernising the art form; we hear from some of Verdi's finest exponents, from Carlo Maria Giulini to Leontyne Price, and revisit their classic recordings that give a vivid illustration of their approach to his music; Helena Matheopoulos discovers the affinity between Verdi and Shakespeare and their shared theatrical genius; and making the case for Simon Boccanegra, one of Verdi's most distinctive and finely wrought scores that deserves our attention.
