LONG-SPINED SEA SCORPION
Spot their eyes and then find the outline of their body. Apart from an amber ring around black pupils, long-spined sea scorpions (Taurulus bubalis) change their colours so they are always camouflaged against their background. A look at short turf of pink seaweeds on grey rocks can reveal them in glorious splashes of pink on grey, while around kelp they take on murky green and brown shades. Rather than colour it is the distinctive shape of long-spined sea scorpions that makes them recognisable. Their heads are disproportionately large in relation to their body that quickly tapers into a small tail fin. Even so their head is not big enough for their appetite, which includes prey as big as they are – up to 20cm long. Long-spined sea scorpions have expandable mouths that enable them to eat huge meals, although mostly they eat prawns and smaller fish. As their name suggests they do have spines, on their gill covers; however, these spines are not venomous.
