This selective survey provides an introduction to the wide range of possibilities, old and new, steam and diesel, looking at aspects of design, planning, construction, tracklaying, detailing, and operation, along with some prototype inspiration, both historic and contemporary, plus examples of finished layouts in various scales and gauges.
