REAL TO REPLICA RED SERIES 14
Sea Harrier
by Andy Evans
The Fleet Air Arm must have surely reached its lowest ebb when it launched its last fixed-wing aircraft, a Phantom FG.1 from HMS Ark Royal’s catapult on 27 November 1978. This followed the then Labour government’s decision to end the Navy’s fixed-wing capability, having already cancelled the P.1154RN and a new carrier destined to replace Ark Royal. The decision makers settled instead for helicopter-based ‘commando carriers’ or ‘through-deck cruisers’, more commonly known as ‘see-through cruisers’ as they were so obviously designed with a version of the Harrier in mind. The first flight of the Sea Harrier was made by XZ450 on the 20th August 1978 and the first aircraft handed over to the Navy was XZA451 on 18th June 1979, but perhaps the Sea Harriers finest hour was during the Falklands War of 1982, when after just a few short years of operation it became the stuff of legend. As the ‘Real to Replica’ title suggests there is also a section on how to model the Sea Harrier in popular scales, making this book an ideal source for both the enthusiast and scale modeller alike.
