YOU DON’T always need fancy flashgun attachments to direct and control light where you want it. Fire the flash at a piece of white card that’s angled towards the subject, and you’ll be able to spread and soften the light (as shown on the right). You can also use black card as a ‘flag’ to control the spread of light from a flash and spilling onto other parts of your setup or into your lens (as shown on the far right). If you want to highlight a small area of the subject then you’ll need even tighter control over the beam of light. You can do this by making your own ‘snoot’ by rolling a sheet of black paper into a tube around the flash head. As with other attachments though, make sure the flash head doesn’t get too hot and overheat.
