Valuing Virtual Connections

The new Arizona Mineralogical Society website will have at least six lectures by Bob Jones.

As many of you are aware, the internet has become a major source for information and news and Rock & Gem ‘s web site can be a helpful resource. The new revised www.rockngem.com format is certainly informative. Check it out!

Speaking of the internet, there is something your club can do locally to solve a problem we have all faced in past years. How oft en have you read or heard about a mineral symposium you’d really like to attend but can’t? How oft en have you heard about a really informative or entertaining talk at your club meeting that you missed? We simply can’t get to every event, even all of our own club’s activities.

Now there is a solution to that frustration local clubs can develop. Surely, your club has a few members who are technically skilled and can record those club presentations and make them available to club members. Your club members can record and set up a way to develop access to an existing website so only members and chosen others can enjoy those talks at their leisure. It is even possible to record any nearby symposium lecture, being sure go get permission from the organizers and presenters in advance out of courtesy and to avoid legal problems. Setting up such a website program preserves those good programs and makes them available to club members and chosen friends for private viewing for years to come. Setting up such a project will require an investment of money for equipment and to set up on your club’s website, in addition to the time of club members willing to do the recording and editing and set up the club website.
