Our pick of the latest paperbacks is YA author Leigh Bardugo’s first “adult” book, NINTH HOUSE (Rated 4 out of 5 stars, 20 October, Gollancz). It follows a freshman at Yale tasked with monitoring the university’s secret societies, which are messing with forbidden magic and raising the dead… We said: “Bardugo reels out fragments of plot that hook you in, darting between several timelines to prevent linearity making the story predictable. It makes for a college story that’s far from juvenile.” Laura Lam’s ecofeminist space opera GOLDILOCKS (Rated 3 out of 5 stars, 29 October, Wildfire) follows five women from a world ravaged by climate change, as they pilot a spaceship to a planet in the Goldilocks zone.
