What Board Games Mean to Me, feels like it should be a coffee table book. Published by Aconyte Books, who are at the forefront of books around the tabletop industry – they do some gorgeous pulp style novels in the worlds of our favourite games, from Arkham Horror to Legend of the Five Rings, Keyforge and beyond – it’s a collection of essays from people within the board game industry that, as the title suggests, discusses what board games mean to them personally.
It features a real mix of names, Reiner Knizia (publisher of over 800 board games), Sir Ian Livingstone (co-founder of Games Workshop), Matt Forbeck (Marvel Roleplaying Game), and many more. It covers the whole range of the hobby, almost unpredictably, and means you’ve got a great mixture of voices and experiences amongst them.
Former editor of Tabletop Gaming magazine, Christopher John Eggett also contributed – regular readers will be unsurprised by his love for Carcassonne and Root! Whilst I’d heard the stories of these before, there was something heartwarming about their presence in print, though, as writers in a print magazine, that’s probably also unsurprising to hear.
