Words by Matt Jarvis
When it comes to the best big movie monster, there are only two real answers: King Kong or Godzilla. The Beatles-or-The Rolling Stones debate of the cinematic world has raged on for decades since the enormous ape and gigantic lizard first stomped onto the silver screen, with the two eventually clashing directly in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. (Spoiler: Kong won.) Godzilla has gone on to beat up other monsters, and both Kong and Godzilla have returned to screens alone in various incarnations – including recent reboots of both film franchises in the last few years – in the time since, but the question remains open as to which colossal creature is top of the food chain.
Hollywood won’t take another stab at solving the conundrum until Godzilla vs. Kong hits cinemas in 2020. Luckily, game design genius and Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield came up with a way to solve the ultimate showdown on the tabletop all the way back in 2011, in the form of King of Tokyo.
