Roderic O’Conor Field of Corn, Pont-Aven, 1892, oil on canvas, 15x15in (38x38cm)
Born in Co. Roscommon in Ireland in 1860, Roderic O’Conor later moved to France, working around Paris in rural art colonies including Pont-Aven in Brittany. This major exhibition of O’Conor’s work at the National Gallery of Ireland explores paintings he produced between 1886 and 1902, showing alongside work by post-Impressionist artists, such as Gauguin and Van Gogh, who, in particular, influenced the evolution of O’Conor’s painting style. The exhibition is divided into four themes: from new discoveries in the 1880s to the legacy of Pont-Aven after 1900, providing an opportunity to see how his work developed as it was influenced by the painters around him. A series of events has been planned to coincide with the exhibition.
