I know we can’t always rely on fine weather during the summer, but I’m a very optimistic person so the colours I’ve used here are painted from scenes in good summer weather. I paint en plein air, particularly in the summer and autumn, as nothing can beat your response to the view and seeing the colours in the landscape first-hand.
During 2016 I was lucky enough to be Artist in Residence in a specially designed studio on the sea wall in Lymington and later the same year at Bucklers Hard in Beaulieu. This was a marvellous opportunity to respond directly to the landscape and see the subtle changes in colour that the weather brings on a daily basis. A landscape can be so inspiring and if you’re not able to paint it directly in watercolour then it is good to make notes or a quick sketch that can be used for future reference. Successful landscapes always convey the mood and sense of the place. Colour and the tones of your colours can be used to create the effect of the light and the weather conditions of the landscape.
