Many things have happened during the Mad Hatter’s tea party, and, who knows, maybe a quick two-player card game was one of them. In mixture of very light deckbuilding with top trumps mechanics, Tea for 2 has a surprising level of depth packed in a small game with adorable artwork.
Starting with the same base decks, players simultaneously reveal their top cards. Whoever has the highest value wins the round and therefore can use the value difference between the cards to purchase a new card or perform a card-specific action. The aim of the game, as one would expect, is to get the most stars, victory points. Some can be generated through in game actions, for example rotating the hand of the pocket watch, and others are gained at the end by completing objectives that are randomly dealt during the setup.
With different card actions, pocket watch powers and various tokens abilities, Tea for 2 gives a myriad of paths to victory, while at the same time not overbearing players with complex rulesets. With the random card draws, comes the spice of the luck, however throughout the game players can get rid of weaker cards to tip the odds their favour.
With relatively short playtime and delicious looking artwork, Tea for 2 indeed feels like having a nibble on a crunchy biscuit with your tea, giving you something to chew on but also leaving you with a warm feeling.
