TOKYO GAME SHOW
Designer: Jordan Draper | Publisher: Jordan Draper
What’s better than one game? 62 games of course. As with Draper’s other games we have a handful of guest designers (Hiroshi Kawamura, Yu Maruno) – but rather than a few games in the box, there’s a massive range. Which is good, we’re looking to get five seconds of fun on repeat here. The box contains a handful of devices for the games master, or host, to dish out to make the game work – from dice, glow in the dark discs, cards and points tokens. The host is encouraged to ham up the host guise to dish out a series of word games, moving games, dexterity games, team games, quiet games, timing games, and possibly most interestingly – glow in the dark games – all over a series of five rounds.
The games themselves are what you’d expect from such a large selection, quick, fun, and a little like being at a children’s party. The glow in the dark discs are great for games like Ghosts, where the host awards a disc every time someone names a visiting spirit well, whereas simple hide and seek games with items or points tokens are surprisingly well received. Equally, simple word games like Aliens! asks players to make up a phrase that starts with “aliens…” – like “aliens, with floppy femurs” – around the circle until someone laughs and is eliminated. As with all these games, there’s ways to integrate it into other Draper games, which here just means adding more props for similarly silly fun.
With the right group, you can drop the charade of there being anything here but a full evening’s worth of challenges, punctuated by whatever keeps your party motivated.
It’s not as cerebral as some of the other games but as a box of little party games goes, it punches well above its weight.
