This is probably not an uncommon story. A woman comes home unexpectedly to find another ‘woman’ in her bedroom. Shocked when it is discovered that this had been going on for years, she separates from the man she has lived and produced children with. The initial emotion is shock – the biggest shock of her life, followed by anger, at the deceit and the secrecy.

I understand all manner of conditions, so my first step on finding out, was to raid the hospital library for all the books about trans-people, and all current research containing statistical data such as: forty percent of transvestites have served in the armed forces or police force. The medical profession describes transvestism as ‘a condition’. I read about the whys and wherefores and life-patterns which, having met many transvestites during the past two years, seem to me to be plausible if not predictable.
