When people think of Africa, what is generally the first image that springs to find? For many, it will be grassy plains peppered with acacia trees and occasional kopjes, and wildlife — both large and small — roaming the vast savannah.
Big game has always been Africa’s best-known attraction and soon after the continent was first opened up by famous explorers, the first ‘tourists’ were big-game hunters in search of the ‘Big Five’. Today’s tourists are still drawn to Africa by the Big Five, but they are more likely to be shooting through high powered cameras (or smartphones) than high-powered rifles. Conservation of wildlife is, therefore, key to the longevity of Africa’s travel industry.
