For nearly three decades, Joseph DeAngelo lived the quiet life. All the while, though, the former police officer was hiding the darkest of secrets: that he was in fact a multiple serial killer, rapist and house-breaker who had managed to evade justice. During the 70s and 80s DeAngelo had perpetrated a series of crime sprees, graduating from burglary to rape and horrific murder. The crimes of the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the (Original) Night Stalker were all his work. In 2001, two of the crime sprees were linked by DNA, and in 2013 the late crime writer Michelle McNamara gave the still-unknown slayer a new name: The Golden State Killer. It would be five more years before the net finally closed in on the then-72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo, Jnr., following a renewed investigation. Read this issue for the full story.

DeAngelo, of course, was not the first killer to evade justice for so long. Steven Carlson was a teen himself when he stabbed 14-year-old Tina Faelz to death in Pleasanton, California, in 1984. Thirty years later he would be sentenced for Tina’s murder, but that was not the end of the story…Find out what happened next in True Detective March.
