America: Philadelphia veggie restaurant goes vegan
A diner in South Philly has delighted plant-based customers by cutting cow’s milk from its menu – thereby making the eatery 100 per cent vegan. The Tasty, which serves ‘vegan comfort food’ announced the change on its Facebook page, with a simple note saying: “We will no longer be serving dairy for coffee drinks as of today! Come try our selection of oat, almond, macadamia, coconut or soy milks.” Ben Pierce, a co-owner with Sofia Baltopoulos and Kate Hiltz, told a local news outlet that the removal – which was low key – had been implemented over a couple of weeks, as they had hit a critical mass of ‘regulars’ who were originally attached to dairy milk in their coffee, but had swapped it f or plant-based alternatives. He said: “Yeah, they all pretty much converted after a while.” The Tasty opened in May of last year, and the only non-vegan item served was cow’s milk. According to owners, their ‘baby steps’ strategy is to get ‘mainstream’ coffee drinkers through the door, then ‘excite, educate, and change gradually’.
