THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES

CALLED “THE SINGLE BEST BASEB ALL BOOK OF ALL TIME ” BY RED BARBER, THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES STANDS AS A SEMINAL LINK BETWEEN THE DEADBALL ERA AND MULTIPLE GENERATIONS

Baseball has been an American institution for more than 150 years. Over its history there have been a number of great books and writings on the game and those who played it professionally. Of these, there is one that stands out above the rest and it is the result of one man’s labor of love. It was a project that he had to see all the way through, no matter how many miles he had to travel and how long it would take.

It’s a book of interviews with former players from the deadball era, and it exists because of the passing of Ty Cobb inspired this man to capture a lost era of baseball before it was too late and all of the participants were dead.

The book is The Glory of affeir Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It and the man that wrote it was the late Lawrence S. Ritter who passed away in 2004.

Inspired by Cobb’s death in 1961, Ritter realized that there were a number of other deadball era players still alive that were contemporaries of Cobb, but they were all getting up in years.

Ritter thought of a project like what John Lomax and his son, Alan, did with American folk music in the 1930s and 40s. It was their forethought to travel the country and record this music that preserved folk music for future generations.
