The bestselling author tells Chris High how he got his inspiration for his latest crime thriller

As a busy academic working at the University of Liverpool, a father and the owner of a menagerie of animals, David Jackson would have a legitimate excuse for putting writing on the back burner. Far from it. David is the author of seven novels, the most recent being Don’t Make A Sound (Zaffre), which, along with his last two, A Tapping At My Door and Hope To Die, feature former undercover officer Nathan Cody.
By its very nature, being a university lecturer is time consuming. ‘I have to be fairly disciplined. On weekdays, I will usually go up to my study and write after my evening meal,’ David says. ‘Weekends can be a bit more flexible. That said, I try not to beat myself up if I miss a session: sometimes the demands of university work are such that I cannot cope with doing two jobs on the same day. I’m fortunate in that my work in a computer science department means that I usually know what I’m talking about when I create characters who are hackers or computer experts.
