Awards for promising student writers

Aiming to recognise and reward emerging critical and creative talent, The Lancaster Writing Award has a new category this year for Script and Screen Writing to add to its ongoing categories of Criticism, Fiction and Poetry. All categories are open to Year 12 and 13 students in the UK and international students in the final two years of their secondary education.

The first prize winner will receive £100 in book vouchers and publication in Cake, the University of Lancaster’s student journal. Second and third prize winners will respectively gain £50 and £25 in book vouchers and their work will receive website publication. Entries can be made in more than one category and there are no limitations on the style of writing or on submitting a piece of work that has been part of your school or college coursework. Entries in the Criticism and Fiction categories should be a maximum 1,500 words, poetry entries no more than 25 lines and scripts should be no more than eight pages long. To get an idea of the kind of writing the judges will be looking for it is suggested you read the work of current undergraduates at the University in the online Flash Journal and shortlisted entries from previous Writing Awards.
