Structure : The writer’s quest
Giving structure to your fiction is essential – and it can be challenging. Leon Conrad, author of the award-winning book, Story and Structure: A Complete Guide outlines a simple structure he uses at every stage of the writing process, and explains how you can use it to find your way through your story and make your writing flow
Leon Conrad
What kind of writer are you? Are you a ‘planner’ who likes to map out the arc of the piece you’re working on first? Or are you a proverbial ‘pantser’, a ‘seat-of-the-pants’ writer who prefers not to plan ahead? I have a bit of both in me. Maybe you do, too. Whichever approach we take as writers, when we feel our ideas flow naturally; when we find ourselves working in harmony with story or with poetry; when we feel the natural patterns of tension build, then release … there’s just nothing like it. So how can we experience that flow at every stage of the writing process, whichever approach we take?
Whether I’m writing fiction, non-fiction, narrative, lyric poetry, or free verse, I’ve found an invaluable story structure that works for both approaches to writing. It’s helped me ease through writers’ block, deal with plot holes and developmental issues, and has helped me make my writing more compelling. It’s a story structure you’ll already be familiar with; a story structure that naturally underpins what you do – not just as a writer, but also as a problem-solver in everyday life. It flows along so naturally, we hardly notice its presence.
