Increases in the costs of energy, paper and printing, as well as import problems caused by Brexit, transport costs and the low value of the pound are set to see the price of books rise significantly over the next year. Some publishers are considering 10-20% increases, while others are reported to be considering using thinner, cheaper paper and cutting back on such features as foil lettering, coloured edges and illustrated endpapers. Juliet Mabey, co-founder of Oneworld, the awardwinning indie publisher, told the Guardian that hardbacks, either new titles or reprints, ‘which would have been affordable a year ago, are no longer cost effective’.
