RESEARCH TIPS
The British Empire, aka ‘the empire on which the sun never set’, was a worldwide system of dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates and other territories. For over three centuries it was ruled and administered by the UK and its predecessor states. It was constantly in a state of change, but at its peak it was the largest formal empire ever known in history.
Although there have been, and continue to be, debates regarding whether the Empire was a force for good or not, there’s no denying that regardless of what your personal view is, it was a truly transformative force: its legal, political, economic, linguistic and cultural legacies are still very much present even today.
Understanding the basics
The British Empire as a topic area is enormous. Even if you know something about it already, you may want to refresh your memory about the overall picture before you delve into your particular area of interest. Your local library is bound to have history books that will cover the evolution of the Empire. Alternatively, explore the topic online. For instance, you could consult the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s entry (https://writ.rs/britannicaempire) and follow any hyperlinks that interest you.
