Writers need to keep their heads in the clouds but their feet on the ground. Learn how professionals balance delusion and pragmatism, imagination and reality, with Steven Chapman

Most writers are delusional… it comes with the territory. On the one hand, writers must invent innumerable imaginary worlds, creating lives from scratch and dreaming up conflict in order to create satisfying fiction. On the other hand, deluding oneself about the realities of a writer’s life can damage your career by infuriating readers, alienating you from other authors, and increasing levels of procrastination – a writer’s worst enemy.

It’s said that you have to be slightly delusional to enter into a field with such stiff competition, where thousands are submitting each and every day. The money is lousy (for the most part), and the hours are long and unforgiving. The facts, the figures, the statistics – they all serve to force a budding writer to the conclusion that the only thing to do is give up. Out of all the people that try to make it, only a tiny fraction do so, and only a small amount of those ‘make it big’ – meaning earning enough to quit their day job.
