FROM FACT To fiction

Be inspired by everything around you, with ideas for turning real life into workable plots, from Lynne Hackles

Ideas are everywhere but we often can’t see them. However, once we train ourselves to look for them they keep popping up. It’s as if we have an idea-finding muscle that goes flabby if we stop looking but we can firm it up again when we start taking notice.

So, what should we, as writers, be taking notice of?

Some fiction begins with a place that inspires. It could be an old cottage or a new housing estate, a castle or a beach.

Some writers find inspiration comes from people watching.

Angela Lanyon noticed a grey lady getting off a bus – grey hair, face and clothing. She could have been anybody. Annie Body, thought Angela, and went on to ask what this woman’s life was like. What would her death be like? These questions led to a play about special funeral directors who supplied mourners and provided the corpse with a fictional and fascinating past. Her funeral was the first time this grey lady ever had anything to look forward to. Buried by Blossom was performed with great success at various venues and won an award as an original play.
