One good thing to happen during lockdown was the light that was shone on the issue of racism and the inequality that exists for ethnic minorities in publishing. The result was an upsurge in sales in books by authors from ethnic minority authors and people were actually talking about it. And quite rightly so.
It does, however require sensitivity and thought and writers who have ethnic minority characters in their work can struggle to give them an authentic voice. Writers sometimes have difficulty getting characters of different ages, sexes, races, nationalities right and they run the risk of coming across as a a cliché or, even worse, a parody or even racist in itself.
