Two of the most popular questions I get asked are 1) what do I do in
my spare time and 2) why do I like Jaguars so much. The answer to the
second question is long, far too long for a polite, off the cuff remark
over a social drink. So the quick answer I usually give is it’s due to how
they make me feel.
When I experience all the power, prestige and performance a
Jaguar offers, I get an excited tingle inside and become that tenyear-
old boy sat in his father's burgundy 420G once again. And the
wonderful thing is, I experience these emotions no matter what sort
of Jaguar I drive. Whether it’s a modern XKR-S, my own S-TYPE or
a classic XK 120, I'm always
excited to get behind the
wheel. I’m sure all of you have
a similar story.
I have to say, though,
especially exhilarating when
the Jaguar is good value, when
it costs the same amount as a
new Korean hatchback. There's
no better exponent of this than
our August cover car – the
post-facelift XJS (p30). Here's a
Jaguar that never fails to excite,
that always turns heads and even if you use it simply to pop down to
the shops to buy milk, makes you feel like you've won the lottery. Yet
the truth is a few grand is all that's required to secure these genuine
moments of motoring pleasure. And although the XJS 4.0 coupe
has always been a favourite of mine, it's not alone since the X100-
generation of XKR convertible (p60) and S-TYPE V8 (p78) will also
make its driver feel more like David Beckham than David Brent.
Oh, and making weak football analogies is the answer to question one.
