THE DIRTY DOZEN
The charity Garden Organic is urging people across the UK to think more carefully about the fruit and vegetables they’re buying, and consider growing their own. This comes following an analysis of government data by Pesticide Action Network (PAN) UK, showing a hidden cocktail of pesticides in shop-bought produce.
In the analysis 89% of strawberries, 78% of grapes, 81% of pre-packed salads and 52% of apples were among the ‘dirty dozen’ fruit and veg that have been shown to contain multiple pesticide residues. In some cases, this included up to 14 different pesticides.
James Campbell, chief executive of Garden Organic, said: “It’s shocking to see the extent of the hidden cocktail of pesticides in many of the foods we readily consume day to day, and we’re urging consumers to sit up, take notice, and take action to help improve the health and well-being of themselves and their family.”
