LAST WORD
A TIMELESS WONDER, REALLY?
Staff writer Tony Flanagan finds that not everyone shares his passion for home-grown produce
One of my favourite comic sketches of all time has to be from the 1980s sitcom The Young Ones where Neil the hippie tries to explain to Rik, his cynically incredulous flatmate, the ‘timeless wonder’ of nature.
Neil is positively euphoric: “We sow the seed, right, nature grows the seed, then we eat the seed,” as he throws unopened packets of seeds on to the ground. He repeats this mantra several times as Rik becomes more and more frustrated, evident in his heavily sarcastic: “The beauty of your plan Neil seems to rest on everyone being really into seeds,” before bashing Neil over the head with a spade.
