AS RESPONSES go, they do not come more emphatic than this.
We were all ready to write Daryl Powell and Castleford Tigers off after last week’s humiliation at the hands of Leeds Rhinos. And why not, given the way they were beaten so comprehensively? But Powell insisted afterwards that there would be a response - and how right he would turn out to be!
Powell has transformed Castleford from cellar-dwelling relegation scrappers into genuine trophy contenders during his eight years in charge at the Tigers, but there has always been one thing missing.
Yes, they finished top of the table in 2017. But that success will always be overshadowed by the failure to win the big one at Old Trafford just a few weeks later. Powell himself admitted it in the run-up to this game: Castleford have yet to win a major trophy other than the League Leaders’ Shield during his time in charge.
