LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP
WORKINGTON TOWN may have had a mixed start to their pre-season reparations, but coach Anthony Murray has been encouraged by what he has seen so far.
In their first pre-season game of the year, Town went down 22-6 to Whitehaven in the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy game, before playing for less than an hour against Barrow when a floodlight failure caused the game to be abandoned.
However, Murray has been able to take the positives out of the game time against higher league opposition.
"I thought playing two Championship sides would test us and we might be under the pump defensively against them," Murray told the Cumbria Crack website after the abandoned game.
"We were in both games but I thought we handled that side of the game very well, which was encouraging.
"In the last ten minutes of the half against Barrow we got good field position for the first time and made it count with a try. We forced a goal-line dropout and might have had a second try before half-time, so there was a lot to feel pleased about."
Murray will again face Championship opposition when the club returns to preseason action against a Bradford Bulls select side on Saturday, February 4.
