LOSING OUR STALWARTS

GARRY SCHOFIELD reflects on the recent loss of several figures who played big roles in Rugby League history
HOW sad to be reflecting on the deaths of a trio of real Rugby League men in Maurice Oldroyd, Fred Lindop and David Oxley.
My sincere condolences go to the family and friends of all three.
I was already intending to write about the British Amateur Rugby League Association, of which Maurice, who has died aged 87, was such a driving force as a co-founder, chief executive, chairman and patron, because that organisation celebrates its 50th anniversary this year - and that’s a fitting testament to his dedication to and passion for that side of our game. I’m hoping there’s a special dinner to mark a magnificent milestone.
I was proud to be the guest speaker at the 40th anniversary event in Huddersfield, where the organisation was founded and is based, and still have the hip flask and cuff links I was presented with as a thank you.
They mean a lot to me because BARLA means a lot to me.
