B ack in the days of Windows 9x there was a lot of fuss around disk defragmentation. Those early Windows machines used the FAT16/ FAT32 file systems that suffered from inefficient hard drive usage. The more information that was written there, the more fragmented the hard drive suffered. The “defrag” disk optimisation procedure was recommended to put those bytes back into some kind of order.
