Firewall distros
WE COMPARE TONS OF STUFF SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO!
Nate Drake is putting five dedicated firewall distros to the test this month, burning through all the hype to find the best one.

HOW WE TESTED…
Firewall distros are designed to do one thing very well, so they don’t have advanced GUIs or bloatware – this means they functioned perfectly well in a VirtualBox VM with a 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 8GB hard drive. We noted that some firewall distros, such as IPFire and Alpine Linux, can run directly in RAM but went through the install process to preserve network configuration and store updates.
Where possible, if a firewall distro offered a web interface, we simulated this using a VM running Ubuntu 23.04 using VirtualBox’s Internal Network feature. Command line lovers will be pleased to learn there’s no requirement to use the interface for setup or maintenance but it does make life easier for newer network admins.
Some of the distros covered, such as Endian Firewall, offer paid premium versions but in these cases we ran our tests using the free community versions.
