NORTHERN CYPRUS
Little-visited Golden Beach, also known as Fat Sand Beach, is more than two miles long
A slender finger pointing to the easternmost end of the Mediterranean, Cyprus’s Karpas Peninsula is reluctant to let go of summer, with November temperatures still in the high teens or low twenties. This little-developed extremity lies in the northern part of the island, a self-declared Turkish republic. It isn’t recognised internationally, but travel here poses few problems, and crossing from the Greekspeaking south has been possible for more than a decade. Driving up the Karpas Peninsula is a trip back to an older Cyprus: sleepy villages like Büyükkonuk (Komi Kebir in Greek) and Boltaşlı (Lythrangomi) give way to wild stretches of sand. Best of all is Golden Beach, more than two miles long, and part of a national park.
