As it’s getting chillier and we’re trying to keep the heating off for as long as possible, the first things to feel the cold are our hands. If you’re sewing, knitting, typing or playing the piano, it’s nigh on impossible to wear gloves, but our roomy fingerless mittens will keep your hands and wrists cosy while still allowing you full movement of your fingers. If you’ve got a ratty old scarf or a stained skirt, this project is a great way to save the good portions of fabric, as each pair only requires a section slightly larger than an A3 sheet of paper. You’ll need the same for the lining, so don’t throw out that well-washed flannel shirt! Made from mid-weight wool mix with a soft cotton lining, they hold heat while avoiding that ‘scratchy’ feeling, and the addition of a half strap allows you to slip them on easily before tightening the fabric around your wrists. If you prefer a tighter fit around your fingers, the pattern is easily adjusted by taking in the seam opposite the thumbhole, and the glove can be lengthened to cover your forearm if desired.
