Move new apps before running
Download an app in a Zip archive, expand it, and run it where it is. Although you may not notice, macOS won’t run the app from there, but launches a copy from a semi-random folder buried deep, a process known as app translocation. Introduced in macOS 10.12 (Sierra), it defends against malware taking advantage of that app’s location.
To avoid this, move the app from its original folder to somewhere different, such as the main Applications folder.
Rules determining whether translocation occurs are subtle, but it shouldn’t happen if you move the app individually so it’s enclosed by a different folder before running it for the first time. Move it within its original folder, though, and every time the app is run, it will be translocated. That can stop it from being updated, and may make it unstable.
